Postdoc position in 'The adaptive significance of toxin production in marine micro-algae”
Postdoc at Marine Biological Section
Department of Biology
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
The Project HABTOX, funded by the “The Independent Research Council of Denmark”, offers a 2 year and 5 months post doc position in the adaptive significance of toxin production in marine microalgae. The project is a collaboration between the Marine Biological Section (MBS), University of Copenhagen, DTU, Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine and Plymouth Marine Laboratories (PML), UK. The post doc will be employed at MBS, which is located in Helsingør. While Helsingør will be the main workplace, the chemical analyses will take place at DTU.
Microalgae form the basis of the food web in marine waters. However, some microalgal species produce lytic toxins, which during blooms can disrupt the food web leading sometimes to mass mortalities of wild and also farmed fish and benthic invertebrates in coastal waters. These lytic algal toxins do not accumulate and spread through the food web as do many other algal toxins, (e.g., shellfish toxins). Toxins released into the water cause immobilization and lyses (death) of competitor microalgae while grazers, on the other hand, may be affected directly via ingestion of toxic algal cells and indirectly through waterborne toxins. The microalgae that produce these lytic toxins are all mixoplanktonic; they photosynthesize and eat. Their toxins not only kill competitors and grazers, allowing them to bloom, but they also gain nutrition by consuming at least some of those organisms that their toxins kill or immobilize. This raises the questions of which biological and physico/chemical factors lead to blooms of such algae; such information can be used to formulate predictive models for water management. The project will contribute significantly to understanding the role played by these algae in the marine microbial food web, providing critical quantitative information that allow us, via ecosystem modeling, to identify circumstances most likely to promote blooms of lytic algae. This information is critical for development of appropriate mitigating management policies including N and P nutrient-release and proactive warnings to safeguard aquaculture.
Applicants should hold a PhD degree in a discipline of relevance for the research project. The position is open to both Danish and international applicants. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant. In addition, experimental experience with toxic marine microalgae and chemical analyses of algal toxins is necessary. Excellent English language skills will be an advantage.
The supervisors will be Professor Per Juel Hansen, UCPH, Professor Thomas Ostenfeld Larsen, DTU and Professor Kevin J Flynn, PML, UK. An assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The final selection of a successful candidate will be made based on the recommendations of the evaluation committee.
The postdoc’s duties will include research within Marine Biology as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.
